Stop procrastinating and start making things. Real things, with your hands. Test them in reality with real people. Decisions should be made based on a prototype of what actually does and doesn’t work, rather than basing decisions a notional ‘might work’. And then quickly launch it, allow users to break it, and iterate on it.

2012 Year In Review

I like lists and I like them even more when they are grouped so here is the latest installment of my yearly Year In Review! Grab a drink (or two) and settle in for a full-on link-fest. Here we go:

January

Did some foreshadowings again, fairly successful this time!
Went to Phoenix to cheer Leslie on in her first marathon (and sit by the pool).
Restlesssoul turned 9 years old
Sat through 4 days of no power from a freak ice and snow storm.
Went a little stir crazy from the seclusion
Started my marathon training

February

Watched my old college roommate Nnamudi on Law & Order!
Became CPR and First Aid certified
Redesigned the Pupgrade website to its current format (so addicting).
Had an, uh, interesting conversation with a pizza guy
Made another mixtape

March

Guster acoustic show with Leslie!
Played my nerd card
Booked my Kona travel. Treat Yo Self!
Armed myself at work
Poured one out for Gowalla. Le sigh
Lumineers Concert with Leslie!

April

Best. April Fools Joke. Ever.
Best. Birthday gift. Ever.
Took a trip to San Francisco and Sonoma for some wine and “The Reggie”
Dorito Loco Taco. It’s delicious
Went over the 200 mile mark on my marathon training

May

Amtrak is just too adorable sometimes
Won Point Inside monthly trivia!
Ran in the Portland 1/2 Marathon with Leslie
Completed my last long run before the Kona Marathon

June

Inquired about the long-lost feature of Twitter: Lists
Made ANOTHER mixtape (heavy on the workout music)
Won Point Inside monthly trivia for the 2nd time
Became a successful Strawberry farmer
Finished my 2nd marathon in Kona, HI!
More importantly, raised over $338,000 money for CCFA
Enjoyed my first First Class experience on the flight home from Kona

July

Played in an outdoor soccer tournament for the first time in… a long time
Rescued Penny from the scary 4th of July fireworks by hiking in the Cascade mountains
Played a round of golf at Newcastle
Played another round of golf at Promontory
Celebrated Laura and Gavin’s wedding in Seattle
Started using a standing desk again (it’s awesome again)
Started watching the London Olympics

August

Learned what is and what is not a berry
Learned a new FAA rule
Celebrated Ashley & Nate’s wedding in Truckee, NV
Did some super-fun rafting while we were at Lake Tahoe
Super-awesome Jack White Concert at WAMU Theater with Dan
Won Point Inside monthly trivia for the 3rd time
Scored some sweet clubhouse passes for the final round of the Boeing Classic
Turkeybear broke the build at work

September

Met our new neighbors
Dave Matthews Band @ The Gorge w/ Robby (and Leslie and Eli)
Got an iPhone5
Went to Vancouver to watch the Sounders @ Whitecaps
Booked our stay at our amazing amazing resort in the Maldives
Started using Evernote. It now runs my life and is yet another technical contraption that I probably could not live without (not really. Mostly.)

October

2 years of being married to this girl
Watched a regular season MLS game in person with 66,451 other people
Stood up in Megan & Justin’s wedding in Connecticut #jandmgotmarried
Discovered the magical land of Stew Leonards Dairy Store
Unplanned trip to New York City (Thanks American, for canceling our flight)
Won some ballet tickets from CCFA
Made a happy Halloween pumpkin
Started a stand-up desk revolution at work

November

Watched Michigan football beat the Gophers in Minneapolis, MN
Mom came to visit us in Seattle! And we went to Roche Harbor on the boat!
Played Where’s Waldo on Election Night
Ran the Seattle 1/2 Marathon (whoops, forgot to train!)

December

Tried out snowboarding (again). Leslie laughed at me
My first Christmas Ships cruise
Launched a project on github
Started aging my first batch of whiskey at home
Lost in the finals of family fantasy football #tacticalturtlenecks2013
(Somehow) Got the high game at Point Inside bowling night
Said goodbye to Maggie one last time. RIP Maggs!
Started becoming addicted to the Nike Fuel band
Bought a brand new car!

2012 was a pretty good year for my predictions, hopefully 2013 proves to be just as accurate. Here we go with another round of foreshadowing for this year:

Things That Will Happen This Year

Travel to the other side of the world (Maldives, Dubai)
Run the Mini Indy for the first time in 6(?) years
Go to a Michigan Football game
Get back to the East Coast with Leslie
Visit my family. Over a year now which is way too long

Things That Should Happen This Year

Go back to Kiawah, SC for some delicious turkey and beach bike riding
Finally break 1:30 for my half marathon time
Redo my website from the ground up
Ski somewhere not called Whistler Blackcomb or The Summit
Go to a Sounders road game

Things That Probably Will Not Happen, But I Hope They Do

Climb Mt. Rainier
Start an open source project and get at least 2 contributors
Park City ski trip!
Plan another international vacation
Point Inside hits it big

2012 Foreshadowings Review

Last year, I made another attempt at predicting and hoping for what I had ahead of me in 2012. What good are predictions without accountability and analysis on their validity, right? Let’s see how I did:

Things That Will Happen This Year (4/5 - 80%)

3 Weddings, 2 of which will require some fun travelling!
» Congrats to Laura & Gavin, Ashley & Nate, Megan & Streeter, and a bonus congrats to Kaelyn and Chris!
Run another marathon
» Boom. Kona. Also ran 2 half marathons in Portland and Seattle so that kinda counts as well, right?
Attend a Michigan Football game
» It was in Minneapolis and it was cold but we won!
Visit a new Hawaiian island
» Big Island for Kona Marathon! Hooray!
~~Take a vacation with the dog (and Leslie)~~
» One day we will do this.

Things That Should Happen This Year (2/5 - 40%)

Book my first international vacation
» Heading to Maldives and Dubai in February!

» Also not happening. Don’t really have an interest in doing a 3rd marathon so do 1.5 marathons in 2 days sounds even less appealing.

Overall: 7/15 - 47%

I thought 47% was pretty bad last year, but I’m starting to realize that this may be the target number. In that vein, this was a pretty good year (especially for the first section). Maybe next year I will start weighting each section to better reflect the value of the respective foreshadowings.
