I have to admit, my first reaction when I heard that Qatar had beaten out the United States for the 2022 World Cup was a big, fat, WTF?! It’s not that I was upset at or hate Qatar, it is more of a frustration at FIFA for selecting essentially the same region for 2 consecutive world cups for no justifiable reason.
However, I have since calmed down and reminded myself that I have a bit of a soft spot for Qatar. Way back in the day, I got really (seriously, REALLY) good at FIFA 94 on my Sega Genesis (oh that sweet, sweet theme music) to the point that I was bored always winning with Ireland and USA. So I set out to find the worst team in the game and they would become my team. That team? Qatar. Nevermind all the quirks and bugs that let you score by standing in front of the goalie on punts or sending a swerving ball towards the goal from the right sideline, it was clearly my ball movement and proper spacing, along with 2 speedy Qatarian(?) center midfielders, that would won me those games.
So, Qatar, congrats on getting the World Cup in 2022. And if you aren’t able to actually make outdoor air-conditioned stadiums for 130 degree heat or deal with the raging alcohol consumption and other unmentionable things, know that the US is here already fully prepared for hosting an extremely successful World Cup.

At the same time, how pissed would you be if the US soccer team played a 4 OT game in the first round, only to show up to their next game absolutely exhausted to play a team that only played 90 minutes?
The overtimes only make sense when you absolutely have to have them. Like in a seven game series where both teams will be totally beat, or farther in the rounds when the players will just have to suffer.
This thing lasts a month. It seems like a pretty decent system to me.
Words of wisdom spicysammich. Ties only exist in the group stages because they can. Also, MLB All-Star games can absolutely end in a tie.

The US World Cup 23-man roster was finalized this morning, here is my knee-jerk starting XI (4-4-2): Howard Spector DeMerit Onyewu Bocanegra Donovan Edu Bradley Beasley Dempsey Altidore top subs: Holden, Clark, Goodson I can’t really see anyone breaking into the starting 11 (maybe Clark for Edu?) unless injuries become an issue.
