Well done @turntablefm iPhone app, you even play audio in the background.  nice.

IDEA: Turntable.fm for airplane flights

Seriously, you have a captive audience for hours that knows nothing about each other. What better way to learn about someone than by having them
spin some tunes? You can integrate it in to the seatback displays and voila! I know they already do this with a trivia game so it’s definitely possible. Everyone is listening to music anyways and the entertainment value of this would be very high.

I think this is a great idea, someone tell the guys at turntable.fm for me!

Music to me:

This is how I deal with music nowadays:

The real question is, when will these services start to merge together (or will they ever?)

iTunes A-Z

Once upon a time, I got the idea in my head that I would try and listen to every song on my iPod in alphabetical order.  I’ve tried it a few times over the years but inevitably failed due to boredom or just forgetting I was doing it.  Then a rare moment of motivation and stick-to-it-iveness that came through on January 14th, 2011 and continued on for nearly 6 months!  I have been posting sporadic updates here over the past few months but here are some compiled stats:

Start Date: January 14, 2011 @ 3:54pm PDT in Seattle, WA
Start Song: “A-Punk” - Vampire Weekend [Live at KEXP Volume 4]
Alphabetical End Date: June 5, 2011 @ 3:06pm EDT in Winchester, VA
Alphabetical End Song: “Zodiac Girls” - Black Moth Super Rainbow [Sagatiba presents Insound Digital Mixtape - Oct 08]
End Date: June 5, 2011 @ 7:15 EDT in Baltimore, MD
End Song: “2080” - Yeasayer [Live at KEXP Volume 4]

The last song...

At first, I had completely forgotten to account for songs that started with a number in this process.  Apparently sorting numbers alphabetically is different than sorting them numerically, which I never really thought about before but makes sense.  Also, very interesting how the first and last song are from the same album which is just a compilation from a local radio station that I bought 3 weeks before starting this journey.  A few more stats about the music itself:

Songs: 2,840
Days: 136
Songs / Day: 20.88
Songs purged: 7
Songs added during the process: 55

Since I was literally listening to every single song, I decided to do some purging of music I don’t really like that somehow found its way into my iTunes listing.  I only came across 7 of those so I’ll consider that a good thing.  Only 55 new songs over 6 months though?  I really fell off my new music wagon during this process!  Looks like I’ll have much more time to explore things like XM Radio and Turntable.fm!

Turntable.fm Wins The Internet

I got my first tease of turntable.fm via The Twitters and a techy guy I follow named Chris Sacca:

@sacca: Having a lot of fun on turntable.fm. You and your friends take turns DJ’ing for each other and talking trash.

I immediately wanted in and starting scouring the web for invites or people I could add as Facebook friends to get me in.  No luck, oh well.  Fast forward a couple weeks and I see a post on Tech Cocktail about turntable.fm so I tried my luck again and lo and behold, I’m in!

This was Monday.

The last 4 days have been filled, FILLED with music and I can’t get enough.  The service breaks down quite frequently during the day but I don’t care, it actually makes me want it even more when I can’t have it!  Its amazing.  Our entire office is hooked on it too.  We have our own room and have wired both floors to play the music out loud so all can hear (we were all listening on headphones anyways).  Its like our very own radio station that plays amazing music all day long with no commercials.  Also, being fairly new to the company, it has been a great way to learn about people in the office.  Another side effect is that we get to passively advertise Point Inside too!  At least 3 people stopped in the room to listen and asked about us today (yay!)

The best part about turntable is the music discovery aspect.  For those of you that remember Lukin [no longer around], this is kinda like that but SO much better.  I have found so many new songs over the past 4 days that iTunes and Amazon will probably open up a special section of their stores just for me.  The chat/trash talking is a great feature that fuels the competition side in all of us, as do the lame/awesome buttons, DJ point system, and avatars.  There are so many good things about it and so many ways it can get better.  I’m hoping for some APIs soon as there are so many ways to slice and present this data. In the meantime, come on in to our room and enjoy the music, maybe even spin some tunes!
